Message from Mr. Szuba

Hello everyone! Please read the following information carefully. This information was also sent out via email along with The Plan through April 5th.
Thank you!
Mr. Szuba

I. 6 to 8 pm THURSDAY REHEARSALS —>

As announced last Thursday to students, I have decided to move Thursday rehearsals back to the 6 pm to 8 pm time slot. As Spring sports are starting up again and the students have demonstrated acceptable behavior after school, this has again become the best option. However, so that we do not have to pull this rehearsal option from students, I want you all to know my expectations for students on Thursdays:

1. After 3:30 (10 minutes after the final bell rings), if the student is staying inside the high school between then and 6, they must stay in the band room under Mr. Szuba's supervision. They may only go to the bathroom or their lockers with permission, and only one at a time.

2. Students walking or driving to dinner and then coming back must leave the property of Strasburg High School immediately. When they return, they must come straight to the band room via the back entrance (Door 18). They may not park behind the school but must park in the student parking lot. If getting dropped off, they must be dropped off at the Ram. The front entrance will be locked.

3. Students will not play any instruments in the band room between 3:30 and 5:30. This time will be treated like a study hall where students are encouraged to do homework, eat dinner, and talk quietly. Students wishing to practice are welcome to in the storage room/practice rooms with the door shut.

These after school rehearsals are hugely important to the success of this program as we currently are not able to rehearse as a full ensemble during the school day because of scheduling conflicts and my job as the middle school band director. This is the student's program, not mine, and good behavior on the part of the students is necessary to continue the growth of the band program. If this is the first you are hearing of this and your student has not told you about the changed time, I understand if your student cannot come this Thursday because of a ride situation.

III. NVD & INDOOR DRUMLINE —>

On Tuesday, March 1st, the Northern Virginia Daily is coming to observe and interview IDL! Members should wear purple Strasburg Music shirts with black shorts so that we'll look good for any pictures. I will try and get a gym guarenteed so we can perform for them.

IV. PRACTICE ENDING CLARIFICATION —>

When a time is listed on The Plan for an activity (3:40 to 6, 6 to 8 pm, etc.), the last time indicates the end of that rehearsal. Rehearsal is the time that the instructors spend working on music or choreography, not necessarily packing up. Many of these activities take a lot of logistics, from packing up instruments to moving props and large percussion equipment back to the band room. Though we try to have students packed up early to be ready to go at 6, we may and often do need to rehearse all the way to the listed time. This is the clarification: If your child must be picked up right at the listed time, they are under no obligation to stay past the listed time. Let them know if they need to go.

Also, building relationships with my students is important to me, so if they want to stay and talk after practice/rehearsal, Mrs. Szuba and I will more than likely chat with them until they go unless we also need to go. Please let your child know if they are to come right out as soon as they are done packing up; I don't want you all waiting and wondering and getting aggravated that they haven't come out yet.
